Best and worst drivers by state in the US

150 150 Zubie Team

With a full year of Zubie driving behind us, we thought it would be interesting to dive in and do some massive data-crunching, to see what fascinating insights we could derive about the American driver- specifically how different states rank in driving aptitude and safety based on their respective drivers.

After analyzing millions of miles driven by thousands of drivers from coast to coast, here are the best and worst drivers by state in the USA! States are ranked by Zubie Score, which factors in driving habits such as acceleration, braking, idling, speed and driving times.

Common ways to increase gas mileage using your driving data

150 150 Zubie Team

The average American spends more than an hour ‘on the road’ every day, with millions upon millions of miles being driven every year by the nation’s passenger automobiles. Whether you use your car for commuting, picking the kids up from school, or for running errands around town, your car is costing you time and money.  With just a few small modifications to your driving habits and the routes that you choose to drive, you could save hundreds of dollars a year – and you could shave several minutes off of your commute each day.

driving car

As gas prices continue to fall, increasing the MPG of your car might not be on the forefront of your mind – but this is as good a time as ever to practice efficient driving habits that can prolong the life of your car while helping your wallet and the environment. With Zubie, you put yourself in the “driver’s seat” of your automobile-use patterns – giving yourself all of the data that you need to modify your behavior for the better.

There are a number of ways that you can increase your overall mileage through simple changes to your driving habits.

  • Try to minimize your use of rapid acceleration.  Slamming your foot on the gas to be the first out of stoplights might be enjoyable, but it also wastes tons of gas and is unsafe.
  • Use your cruise control! When you are driving on the interstate, cruise control is a great way to ensure that your car isn’t expending gas unnecessarily – and it also avoids traffic tickets by keeping you under the speed limit. The only exception to this rule is when you are driving in areas with major elevation changes – since cruise control does not deal with hills very well.
  • Zubie monitors traffic patterns during your daily commute to determine the best time to leave your home or workplace for your drive. This allows you to make small adjustments in your schedule to save time and gas – and it can help you optimize your routine so you are only on the road when traffic is at its lightest. For example, shifting your work day from the typical “9 to 5” just one hour earlier can reduce traffic as much as 75% in some parts of the country – allowing you to spend more time at home instead of stuck in gridlock.

Do you have an easy trick you use to increase your gas mileage? Let us know in the comments section. Drive safe!

5 Reasons To Connect Your Car This Holiday Season

1024 480 Zubie Team

Reason 1 – Because getting stuck in the cold is the worst
Over 52% of car breakdowns are due to a dead or faulty battery- and winter is the most common time of year for a battery issue.  Your vehicle’s battery loses 33% of its power when the temps dips below freezing, and over 50% of its power when it falls below zero. Having a connected car can let you monitor battery voltage so you can avoid being stuck in cold weather.

Reason 2 – Better driving habits means better fuel economy
Gas prices are the lowest they’ve been in 5 years, and you may be one of the millions taking a road trip this holiday season. Connected devices can help you understand your fuel consumption and driving habits to help you increase fuel economy and spend less on gas.

Reason 3 – Coordinate travel to all of your holiday destinations
Connecting your car can help you see where your friends and family are on the road, making carpooling a breeze and giving you peace of mind that they’re on their way safely to their holiday destination.

Reason 4 – Big savings on car stuff
Some connected car solution are beginning to offer discounts and rewards based on your driving activity and usage – you can save on everything from car parts and repair, to insurance and car warranty. Cashing in on one or two of these could end up paying for the cost of the connected car solution alone.

Reason 5 – Because you car deserves some holiday love
Your car takes you thousands of miles a year through rain, sleet, sun and hail – why not reward it with something that keeps it doing the same for years to come? Connected car solutions like Zubie are the perfect gift for any driver who wants the information they need to keep the wear and tear of their favorite vehicle in check this season!

Zubie Team Spotlight: How I Zubie by Adrienne

150 150 Zubie Team

Many years ago Steve Jobs was quoted as saying “people don’t know what they want until you show it to them,” and this couldn’t be truer with my Zubie device.  As the Operations Analyst for Zubie I’ve found this device to be a huge benefit in my life.  At first I didn’t know what to expect, but I remained opened minded, and boy was I surprised.

Protecting my family:

As a first-time mom, I’m super concerned with every detail of my daughter’s life including her comings and goings.  And since my fiancé and I share a car with her car seat in it, I’m able to see where my fiancé and daughter are at any given time with my Zubie App.  In addition to being able to see their location, I’m able to set up location notifications so if my fiancé takes her some place outside of our home I’ll get a notification which lets me know “Now may not be a good time to call him.”  I’m that over protected mom that doesn’t want him texting, calling, or doing anything but focusing on his driving with our bundle of joy in the backseat.

Early detection:

In addition to all these great features, it’s like we now have our own personal mechanic right at our finger tips.  It’s great to be able to log into the App and see the health of our car.  This is one less thing I have to worry or remind myself about.  Now our Zubie app does it for me.

Making my life easier:

I never thought in a million years that I would be using a device such as Zubie to connect me to my everyday life.  I can easily see the benefits of this product for companies to use, but personally I couldn’t conceive of it until now.  Now I don’t think I could live without my Zubie.  As the company continues to grow and add more features I’m looking forward to seeing how much more I can connect to make my life to make things just a little bit easier for me.  And for me the cost is PRICELESS for all the security and comfort I’m getting by having Zubie in our lives.

Zubie’s Ongoing Security Efforts Increase Public Safety for Drivers Everywhere

150 150 Zubie Team

Last month, Argus Security, an automotive security company, notified us of an issue in our device software that we worked to address immediately. We have no evidence that any customer’s vehicles were compromised. Since learning about the reports from Argus, we took swift action and made the appropriate changes to our development process in order to further strengthen our overall security practices.

Zubie takes security very seriously and we are constantly monitoring the evolving telematics landscape to ensure we are defending against the latest possible threats. As part of its continued effort, Zubie has gone through system-wide security testing to protect the safety of both its customers and products.  We work closely with the NCC Group, an international security firm with expertise in improving automotive cyber security, to conduct end-to-end audits of our entire solution.

“Using our knowledge and experience of working in the automotive sector, we worked closely with Zubie’s engineers to incorporate our findings into  Zubie’s development process and further support its ongoing customer security requirements,” said Ollie Whitehouse, Technical Director, NCC Group.

We appreciate Argus’ help in disclosing this issue in a responsible manner to help improve our overall security posture and increase protection for our customers.

Zubie embraces the practice of responsible disclosure, as it helps us achieve our mission of making driving safer, easier, and less expensive for everyone.

Bigger, Better and On the Web – Introducing Web View

150 150 Zubie

We built Zubie always with the mobile experience in mind first and foremost. But it’s been clear from your feedback that many tasks and views would benefit from having a browser accessible interface. So we’re happy to announce our Web View which goes beyond being just a dashboard to allowing almost all capabilities available within the Zubie app –  a truly full-featured web-version of Zubie. And it’s available starting now to every Zubie user.

As you many have noticed, we have been gradually extending the Zubie experience and value beyond mobile most recently with our driving reports which deliver stats and summaries in your email on a regular basis. And there’s plenty more coming.  With our Web View, almost all of the Zubie features are now available in any browser, including on tablets. That includes the Live Map, car health details and trip metrics, and even even newer features such as the Motion Monitor. A larger screen makes real-time location tracking easier, especially for families and businesses with multiple cars, or for visual rendering of multiple trips across many days.

We want to make it easier for you to benefit from Zubie, regardless of the interface, and make it easier to seamlessly to move them. Features coming soon include clicking on scores or trip metrics within the email report to bring up the corresponding detail within the Web View. Clicking on a monthly metric for speeding will use the Web View to show all instances where you were speeding.  Or similarly using emailed trip reports to easily tag trips as Personal or Business. It’s all really about combining simple reports in your email with compelling interactive detail behind it.

How to access

It’s simple- access and login using your normal Zubie username and password, or Facebook login.

What you can do

As we said earlier, almost all Zubie features are supported albeit visualized differently to take advantage of the larger screens and easier typing.

  • Browsing trips and metrics is much easier, and benefits from a large map that can show you numerous trips overlaid.
  • Your car’s engine and battery are easily identifiable and full details are also accessible.
  • Searching for a family member or car is as easy as typing into the search box.
  • Activating new cars is also possible with the Web View and a lot easier when you’re managing multiple Zubie Keys
  • Managing Places for geofencing alerts is also supported and again benefits from faster data entry when you’re adding multiple places at one time.

  • We don’t currently support Groups or location sharing of family members by phone location.
  • We provide limited detail of driving scores but will be adding new capabilities shortly

Try it out and let us know what you think!  We would love your feedback and ideas on improving this. Join the conversation on our community site.
